1-25-27 Disability-centered Disaster Prep – An Enabled Guide to Disaster Response

The unjust reality is that people with disabilities are at a higher risk during and long after a disaster. That’s not just because we have specific functional needs – it’s because we’re living in a world that wasn’t designed for us. In a disaster situation, that can mean barriers to evacuation, lack of accessible information, and inadequate support systems. In this workshop Jason will give an overview of the Why We Prep: An Enabled Guide to Disaster Response resources. For us, being prepared isn’t some hobby or obsession, it’s an everyday necessity. Because of this, we’re already skilled at anticipating our specific needs, and using our knowledge for real-world problem solving. That can make us naturals at disaster prep!

  • When: January 25th from 6:00-7:30 PM
  • Where: Zoom AND streaming on YouTube
  • Meeting Accessibility:
    • There will be sign language interpreters and closed captioning available on Zoom. 
    • Chat will be disabled on Zoom during the lecture to better serve people using screen readers. Participants will still be able to message the hosts.
    • When it comes time for the Q&A, people may ask by messaging in the chat so the host can read it out loud or by raising their hand on Zoom so the host can call on them to ask by voice or by ASL.

Speaker Biography:

Jason Hallmark (he/him) is the Climate Justice Coordinator with the People Over Petro Coalition (POPCO) and currently serves as the Board President for Redtail Resilience Network. His main focus is on the intersection of disability and climate justice and is currently working on disability centered disaster preparation. He believes that preparing to protect the most at risk will protect everyone.
